江戸時代に誕生した浮世絵は庶民を中心に楽しまれた風俗画で、絵師が自ら筆を執った「肉筆画」もありましたが、主要な形態は木版画でした。
本展では木版画を中心に各時代を彩った絵師の作品を通し、浮世絵の歴史や技法の展開、そして浮世絵鑑賞の見どころをお伝えします。
絵師、彫り師、摺り師による分業で制作された浮世絵木版画は、時代ごとに個性的な絵師が登場し、飽きさせることのない工夫で人々の目を楽しませてきました。
本展をきっかけに浮世絵に親しみを感じていただき、今後の作品鑑賞の一助となれば幸いです。
This exhibition “Introduction to Ukiyo-e” chronologically presents various Ukiyo-e (“Floating world picture”) prints, which originated in the Edo period (1603-1867). The history of Ukiyo-e, its technical developments, and tips for Ukiyo-e appreciation are introduced through the works of Ukiyo-e artists, who adorn each period.
We hope that many visitors will feel closer to Ukiyo-e through this exhibition, and that this exhibition will become a guide for future appreciation of Ukiyo-e.

企画展示 「浮世絵にみる花鳥風月」
渓斎英泉「今様花鳥風月」 大判錦絵３枚続 天保期（1830-44）
自然の美しい景色、またそれを鑑賞し詩歌を詠むなどの風雅な遊びを指す言葉に「花鳥風月」があり、古くから絵画の主題としてよく描かれてきました。
本展覧会では風景画、美人画を中心に浮世絵にみる花鳥風月をご紹介いたします。 山水画や花鳥画に描かれてきた花鳥風月は、浮世絵においては風景画、そして美人画からも多く見出すことができ、これらの作品からは、移り行く季節を愛おしみ、楽しむ様子がうかがえます。四季の変化を敏感に感じとり、美しさを見出してきた人々の自然観に思いを巡らせてみます。

Beauties of nature in Ukiyo-e

The Japanese phrase “Kachōfūgetsu (literally flowers, birds, the wind and the moon)” means beauties of nature or elegant pleasures such as appreciating and composing poems about it, which has been one of the major themes of art since the old days.
The exhibition features beauties of nature depicted in Ukiyo-e especially in landscape pictures and portraits of beautiful women. Beauties of nature, a theme in traditional paintings of landscapes or flowers and birds, is also frequented in Ukiyo-e of landscapes or beautiful women. The landscapes and seasonal events depicted in these Ukiyo-e tell how people cherished and enjoyed the changing of the seasons. We hope you will feel and turn your thoughts to the people’s view of nature in the Edo period, such as sensitivity towards the changing of the four seasons and finding charm in it.
子どもは見る者の心を和ませてくれますし、子ども遊びは懐かしさを覚えます。動物もまた見る者の心を癒してくれます。そこで今回は、新春の予祝を込めて、子ども・動物が描かれた浮世絵を、Ⅰ.江戸のわんぱく小僧、Ⅱ.子どもへの愛情、Ⅲ.江戸の動物、Ⅳ.近代の浮世絵に描かれた子ども・動物、といった切り口で展示いたします。江戸時代「天保の改革」による出版統制で、子どもや動物の浮世絵が多く制作されたという歴史的背景もありますが、まずは“かわいい！楽しい！おもしろい！”と、思っていただけたら幸いです。
Children melt our hearts and children’s play brings us nostalgia. Animals also heal us. To celebrate the coming New Year, Ukiyo-e depicting children and animals are exhibited under the following categories. Ⅰ. Naughty boys in the Edo period, Ⅱ. Affections for children, Ⅲ. Animals in the Edo period and Ⅳ. Children and Animals in modern Ukiyo-e.
Many Ukiyo-e featuring children and animals were produced due to strict censorship laws during the Tempō Reforms. Historical context aside, we hope you will enjoy these cute, happy, and fun Ukiyo-e.
秋は芸術、行楽、食欲とさまざまな楽しみ方がありますが、浮世絵にも、風景・行楽、植物、食べ物、そして秋にまつわる和歌や物語に取材した作品が多数あります。そこで今回は“秋”をテーマに、Ⅰ．新版画、Ⅱ．広重の名所絵、Ⅲ．文芸に関連する物語絵・美人絵・役者絵、Ⅳ．芳年の「月百姿」と、画題別の秋の切り取り方をご覧いただきます。吉田博や川瀬巴水などの新版画は圧巻の美しさですし、広重、国芳、芳人などの月ゆかりの作品は昔の風景や秋に対する当時の人々の思いを伝えてくれます。芸術の秋の一日、浮世絵にみる秋をご堪能下さい。
Autumn is filled with pleasures like art, excursions and bon appetites. There are many Ukiyo-e prints featuring sceneries, excursions, plants, dishes, also, Japanese poems and tales associated with autumn. “Autumn” is the theme of this exhibition, presenting aspects of autumn through the following.

Ⅳ. ”One Hundred Views of the Moon” by Yoshitoshi
Shin Hanga by Yoshida Hiroshi, Kawase Hasui and others are outstandingly beautiful. Works related to the Moon by Hiroshige, Kuniyoshi, Yoshitoshi and others present scenes from the good old days and people’s thoughts on autumn back then.
We hope you will truly enjoy autumn charms through Ukiyo-e on an autumn day, perfect for appreciating art.
歌川国芳（うたがわくによし1797-1861）の出世作は、文政10年（1827）頃から刊行された大判揃物「通俗水滸伝豪傑百八人之一個（壱人）」です。国芳の迫力ある筆の力とそれを支えた彫師、摺師の技は必見です。今回は本館所蔵の大判全図を中心に中判、和漢準源氏、そして安永３年正月に浅草奥山で行われた生人形展に関連した生人形シリーズ、さらには先輩後輩絵師たちの影響作も展示いたします。涼しい博物館で“熱き英雄たち”の浮世絵をごゆっくりとお楽しみ下さい。
In 1827, Utagawa Kuniyoshi (1797-1861) rose to fame with the publication of the ōban (26.5 x 39cm) series, “108 Heroes of the Suikoden”. The power of Kuniyoshi’s brushstrokes and the incredible skill of his supporting woodblock carver and printer technicians are not to be missed.
In this exhibition, we feature the complete ōban series of these works from our collection, along with chūban-sized (19.5 x 26.5cm) prints, the “Japanese and Chinese stories in imitation of the Genji novel’” series, and the “Living Dolls” series that takes place in Okuyama district of Asakusa at New Years in 1774.
Further, the exhibition also displays works by later artists and contemporaries that were influenced by Kuniyoshi. Enjoy the hot heroic passion of these ukiyo-e masterpieces in the cool of our museum.
