中山道を描いた風景画の代表作である「木曽海道六拾九次」（天保6～10年《1835~39》頃）は渓斎英泉と歌川広重による合筆で全70図から成る揃物です。本展ではこの「木曽海道六拾九次」全70図を前後期に分けて展観します。併せて、この揃物の成功をうけて制作された歌川国芳の「木曽街道六十九次」（嘉永５～６年《1852~53》）、歌川国貞の「木曽六十九駅」（嘉永５年《1852》）も展示します。

木曽街道に取材した３つの揃物を通し、旅情溢れる作品に旅への思いを馳せ、地方の風物に関心を高めた当時の人々の姿を想像しながらご覧いただければ幸いです。

This exhibition features” the Sixty-Nine Stations of the Kisokaidō Road”. ”The Sixty-Nine Stations of the Kisokaidō Road” (produced around 1835-39/Tenpō 6-10) is the most important series of landscape pictures depicting the Nakasendō Highway (also known as the Kisokaidō Road), which is made up of 70 pictures painted by Keisai Eisen and Utagawa Hiroshige. In this exhibition, all 70 pictures are exhibited, separated into former and latter periods. In addition, other series with the same title produced after the success of the above series are also exhibited; one is by Utagawa Kuniyoshi (produced in 1852-1853/Kaei 5-6) and another by Utagawa Kunisada (1852/Kaei 5).

We hope you will enjoy the three series depicting the Kisokaidō Road, imagining how the people back then thought about travel and showed interest to local scenery and customs, enhanced through the pictures full of travel allure.

縁起の良いモチーフとして現代でも馴染み深い七福神は浮世絵にも多く描かれています。そこには福を授ける神としての姿だけではなく、福神を滑稽に描く戯画や福神に見立てて美人や子どもを描く見立絵もあり、観る者の笑いを誘う描写にも溢れています。幸福をもたらす七福神を中心に作品をご紹介します。

The seven deities of good fortune, familiar even today as an auspicious motif, were often depicted in Ukiyo-e, woodblock prints. The pictures depict the deities not only as images bringing good luck but also as caricatures and beautiful women or children likened to them, and are often filled with expressions infusing laughter. Works with the seven deities of good fortune are mainly introduced in this exhibition.
