Various creatures living under water were common to ordinary people in the Edo period (1603-1867); For example, goldfish, a popular pet today, started to be kept as pets among common people from the middle of the Edo period, and Ukiyo-e woodblock prints show how they were cherished. This exhibition introduces Edo life, focusing on creatures living under water. We hope you will enjoy Ukiyo-e depicting creatures under water in various ways, such as detailed images of fish, fish told in stories, and varieties of fish and shellfish enjoyed in Edo cuisine.
