江戸時代、信州の名所や風俗に取材した浮世絵木版画は江戸の地で多く摺り出されました。善光寺や浅間山といった名所の他、信州を舞台とする物語や合戦に取材した作品が刊行され、中でも木曽街道（中山道）の宿駅を描いた揃物がよく知られています。

陸路や航路が整備され人や物の行き来が活発になった江戸時代には、紀行文や名所図会等の刊行により、特色ある地方の様子が広く伝わり、信州の風土や名所もまた、他の地域に居ながらにして知ることができました。

本展では、江戸の人々が浮世絵を通して思いを馳せた信州をお楽しみいただければ幸いです。

Many Ukiyo-e woodblock prints depicting scenic spots and customs in Shinshū (the old name of Nagano prefecture) were also published in Edo (the old name of Tokyo). For example, pictures depicting scenic spots such as Zenkōji Temple and Mt. Asama, or scenes of tales and battles in Shinshū exist. Series of works depicting the Kiso Highway (the Nakasendō Highway) are also well-known.

Land and sea routes developed and traffic of people and goods became active in the Edo period (1603-1867). Traveler’s journals and illustrated guidebooks were widely published, introducing distinctive features of localities. Among those publications, there were works dealing with Shinshū, through which people living in other areas could know of its nature and scenic spots.

Through the exhibition of such Ukiyo-e, we hope you will enjoy the Shinshū that people in Edo imagined about.
